Add to Memories Tell a Friend
robin, the teen wonder
name. Tim Drake
aliases. Robin, Alvin Draper, Boy Wonder
identity. Secret
occupation. Student / Costumed Vigilante
neighborhood. All over Gotham City

family. Jack Drake (father), Janet Drake (mother, deceased), Dana Winters (step-mother)
age. 16
sexuality. Heterosexual
appearance. Tim Drake is a smallish teenager with a lean build. He engages in regular exercise, but he's not anything close to being bulky. He stands at all of 5'6" and weighs about 135 lbs. He has black hair that he usually keeps cut short (shorter than Nightwing at least). He's also got the blue eyes that everyone in the DC Universe seems to have. People that say that the Robins are cloned and come off an assembly line aren't too far off.
style. Tim Drake is no-thrills when it comes to his dress. He pretty much dresses like your regular teenager. He's a little self conscious about his build, so he wears his clothes a little baggy. Those damn skinny jeans that everyone wears would just bring too much attention to how skinny he is. He's not really flashy or a show-off in any way.

As for his costume, he wears a costume similar to the costumes that all the other Robins wore. Following what happened with Jason Todd, Batman had a costume made that would offer his young charge more protection. He wears a red bullet-proof bodysuit with black briefs, gloves and boots. He always has a yellow utility belt to hold a bunch of different stuff when he goes out. He also wears a black, scalloped cape with yellow lining. The cape itself is flame retardant.

skills. At his young age, Tim Drake's detective skills are among the best in the world. He's been trained in various martial arts by various masters including Batman and Lady Shiva herself. Shiva also taught him how to use the bo staff, much to her chagrin. He's a really good driver, having been taught by Batman to do so at 13. He's undergone extensive training in how to escape capture. And other general ninja-ness.
equipment. Primarily a bo staff. In his utility belt, he keeps R-shaped throwing stars, smoke bombs, and other various tools to help him when he's patrolling Gotham.

personality. Tim Drake is an extremely smart and driven young man. He's also extremely mature for his age, taking on responsibilities that most adults don't even take on. He takes challenges that are thrown his way and uses that quick as a whip brain of his to figure his way out of predicaments.

Because he's so cerebral, he can easily get caught up in his head. He's extremely hard on himself when it comes to what he perceives to be failures on his part. He's very detail-oriented to the part that he can easily get caught up in a case and lose track of time making and going through his notes and miss out on some sleep. Sometimes he just needs a quick smack upside the head--metaphorical--to get him to stop thinking and analyzing everything too much.

Tim's not as gifted physically as the other Robins were and he knows it. He has to work that much harder at the physical aspects of being Robin due to his small size and trouble he has putting on weight. He makes up for it with his cunning mind which more than makes up for any physical disadvantages he's at. He is not against using his size to make people think he's not as strong as he is, using the surprise to his advantage. He almost always keeps his bo staff for leverage.

Tim Drake loves being Robin though. He thinks that The Mission is one of the most important things he's worked towards in his young life. He enjoys helping people and making sure that no one has to deal with the pain that he felt when his parents were hurt. (Where have we heard that one before?)

history. Jack Drake was never one to just sit around. As an archaeologist he was always moving from place to place, researching and going on trips. On a stay in Gotham City, he fell in love with Janet, the woman that would become his wife and the mother of his only son, Tim Drake. Jack's wanderlust had to take a backseat to the young family, so they put down roots in Gotham. Jack and Janet started a successful business and made their way into Gotham City's upper-class.

Tim Drake had always been a huge fan of the circus. He thought the flying Graysons were so awesome, especially Richard who did all the crazy stuff he could do at his young age. He was at Haley's Circus the night that Richard Grayson's parents were murdered. With the Flying Graysons no longer active, and his own interest there waining, Tim started following the adventures of Batman and his new partner Robin. They fought crime in Gotham which was even more awesome than being circus performers. They made a huge difference in Gotham, and even though some people disdained them, Tim thought they were great. Especially that someone younger could actually make a difference. It was inspiring.

After viewing a security tape of a fight between Batman, Robin, and the Penguin Tim noticed that Robin pulled off several acrobatic maneuvers that looked extremely familiar. Only one person could have pulled that off at that age... Dick Grayson! Once he learned that, it led him to deducing that Bruce Wayne was Batman. He figured this all out at the ripe old age of 9 years old! Impressive for a little guy. Instead of running around telling everyone what he figured out, he just kept it to himself. He'd continue following Batman and Robin throughout the years, even when Robin graduated to being Nightwing, and a new Robin came on the scene. Things seemed to be getting back to normal, until the Joker beat this new Robin to death.

With the death of that second Robin, Tim started to notice a trend. Batman had become increasingly violent. He was leaving more and more criminals in the hospital, to the point where he was making the citizens of Gotham nervous. Batman needed a Robin just as much as Robin needed Batman. Tim did the only thing he could think of and tried to convince Nightwing to become Robin again and help Batman out. No matter how hard Tim tried to appeal to Grayson, he would not relent. Nightwing would help out, but not as Robin. He'd stayed under Batman for far too long to go back. Tim argued that Batman needed a Robin, but his argument went unheard. Finally, with the help of Batman's butler Alfred Pennyworth, he borrowed an old--and too big--Robin costume and went out to help Batman and Nightwing. Tim's help was invaluable. He managed to help the former dynamic duo apprehend Two-Face.

Nightwing and Alfred both saw something in Tim. They believed that with the courage and ability he displayed, although rough, he'd make a good fit as Robin. The situation with Jason Todd still weighed on Batman's mind. He wouldn't be willing to take Tim on as Robin unless he felt that Drake was ready. After months of exhaustive--and exhausting training--Batman still hadn't trusted Tim enough to allow him to become Robin.

Tragedy struck when Janet and Jack were kidnapped by one of Batman's villains. Tim still wasn't able to go out as Robin, so he stood back while Batman handled the situation. Batman found out too late that Tim's parents were poisoned. Janet died from her poisoning, and Jack was left a paraplegic. Batman was sure that losing his mother and having his father crippled would leave Tim too emotionally unstable to continue his training as Robin.

Tim would prove Batman wrong when he went out and save Batman from being kidnapped by Scarecrow. Instead of going dressed as Robin, he wore street clothes and a ski mask. The fact that he didn't wear the Robin costume threw Batman. Tim explained that he didn't want to disgrace the Robin legacy if he screwed up. Tim Drake became Robin that day. Nor did his training end there just because Bruce allowed him to play Robin. Batman sent him to train with one of the people that trained him, Lady Shiva. The training was hard, but he learned a lot, notably how to fight with the bo staff. Robin returned to Gotham with bo staff in hand and went to work.

Adjusting to life as Robin was harder than Tim Drake had originally thought. He had to balance going to school with his after-school job. He passed off all the time he was spending out as working as an assistant to Bruce Wayne--which wasn't technically a lie. Initially the change was hard. Tim was a 13 year old kid coming into his own as a young man as well as a new hero. With a little help from friends and allies like Batman and Nightwing, and family like Jack and his new stepmother Dana, Tim would prove himself as a hero independent of Batman. He'd make hero allies like the Spoiler, Superboy and Impulse and have grand adventures of his own. All while managing that 4.0 grade-point average.
